H. P. Davis Rockwell, or Deever, as he is known, commissioned Paul Schweikher to design his previous home, a Prairie style modernist house, in nearby Flossmoor, which was also published. Rockwell found a love for architecture and returned to study under Mies at IIT. He is an architect and a landscape architect. He started in the office of renowned landscape designer Alfred Caldwell (1955-57), then worked in Mies’ office for several years (1957-61) and went on to form his own firm with George Danforth and Daniel Brenner (1961 –1981) and later with Jay Carow (1981-1986). Mr. Rockwell continues today as sole proprietor of his firm.
The partnerships in which Mr. Rockwell served as principal for 25 years acquired distinguished reputations for excellent work as well as awards from the American Institute of Architects. Design, construction and interior planning and design for museums, libraries, historic buildings, corporations and zoo buildings were specializations of the firm and Mr. Rockwell; his other work included site development and landscape design for public parks, schools, zoological gardens, churches, commercial and corporate buildings as well as private residences. Many of the projects had strong components for exhibition, performance, and archival spaces including the storage of rare books and artifacts.
Examples of his projects include: Exhibit, renovation and performance space design at the major museums in Chicago including the Art Institute, Field Museum of Natural History, Museum of Contemporary Art, Spertus Museum, and Lincoln Park Zoo. He also designed private residences in Illinois, Connecticut and Puerto Rico.
